President Praises Supreme Court’s Decision on Michigan
Affirmative Action Case
(Washington, DC) In response to the recent
Supreme Court Decision upholding the University of Michigan
Law School’s efforts to assure diversity through affirmative
action, CBCF President Weldon J. Rougeau released the following
statement:
“As America continues to struggle with the issue of affirmative
action, it is essential for the highest court in the land to
send the right messages. As African Americans, we have never
wanted preferential treatment, we have simply asked for a level
playing field. After centuries of systemic segregation and failed
attempts at integration, Black children are still subjected
to educational systems that are overcrowded and under-funded.
It is imperative that the children, who through no fault of
their own matriculate through substandard elementary and high
school systems, are given an equal opportunity to excel when
they reach college and graduate school levels. Time after time
these students have proven their worth when admitted to the
school of their choice. The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation,
Inc. has embraced education as one of its strategic roles, and
places great value on its Leadership Institute for Public Service,
that hosts intern activities for high school and college students,
and extended programs for Congressional Fellows. We will continue
to make equal opportunity in education a high priority, and
will strongly defend all efforts to level the playing field.”
The CBCF serves as a nonpartisan, policy-oriented
catalyst to educate future leaders and promote collaboration
among community and business leaders, minority-focused organizational
leaders, and organized labor to effect positive and substantive
change in the African American community.
