WASHINGTON – A. Shuanise Washington, President and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF) released the following statement on the passing of Julian Bond, civil rights leader, politician and former board chairman of the NAACP.
“The CBCF is deeply saddened by the passing of Julian Bond. We honor the life and mourn the loss of a lawmaker and activist who—for generations—championed civil rights for African Americans and people in underserved communities.
“From helping to start the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, to serving in the Georgia House of Representatives, to leading the Southern Poverty Law Center as president, and later, the NAACP as board chairman; Julian Bond’s life was dedicated to the pursuit of liberty and justice for all Americans—an ideal we still strive for today.
“Julian Bond leaves behind a legacy of leadership, justice and social change. Our thoughts and heartfelt prayers are with Mr. Bond’s family and friends.”
