CBCF Statement on 6th Annual International Conference on Stigma
The conference aims to eliminate the shame around HIV/AIDS
WASHINGTON—A. Shuanise Washington, president and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF) released the following statement on Howard University’s 6th Annual International Conference on Stigma. The CBCF has been a proud partnering sponsor since its inception. The event takes place Friday, Nov. 20, 2015, from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Armour J. Blackburn University Center, 2397 6th Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20059.
“Although HIV and AIDS is no longer considered a death sentence, African Americans are overrepresented in the infection rate. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, African Americans represent 44 percent of new infection cases.
“Stigma is considered one of the main factors for the epidemic. As a community, we must ban together to have an open dialogue and become educated about HIV and AIDS.
“We join with our conference partners to talk about treatment and prevention in hopes of changing behaviors and encouraging healthier lifestyles.”
