WASHINGTON—The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) today announced that it will host the 28th Annual Mervyn L. & Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Scholarship Celebration on June 24, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. ET. The virtual event will feature a fireside chat with ballet dancer and author Misty Copeland and musical selections from Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Eric Benét. Rep. Jahana Hayes (CT-5) and Rep. Al Lawson Florida (FL-05) are the event’s honorary co-chairs.
Named in honor of the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio and her spouse, Mervyn L. Jones, the Mervyn L. and Stephanie Tubbs Jones Memorial Scholarship Celebration is an annual fundraiser of the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Education Scholarship Program.
“The Scholarship Celebration is a virtual event with real impact for our emerging scholars around the country,” said Tonya Veasey, CBCF President and CEO. “In the face of ever-increasing college costs, deepening student loan debt and an ongoing pandemic, we want to help level the playing field for our outstanding students.”
Each year, CBCF awards more than 300 scholarships to students who show leadership ability as demonstrated through exemplary community service and academic talent. Since 1988, the education scholarship fund has provided millions in scholarships and educational support to African American undergraduate and graduate students nationwide.
“A college or university’s price tag shouldn’t prohibit our students’ academic promise,” Veasey said. “It’s imperative to remove as many financial barriers as we can for these exceptional undergraduates and graduates.”
