WASHINGTON—A. Shuanise Washington, president and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF), today released the following statement on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service.

“Today, we pause to honor the life, vision and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a National Day of Service. As we reflect on his legacy, we remember not just the man, but also his commitment to serving all Americans.

“His courage to overcome adversity and fight for racial equality is an inspiration to, not only African Americans, but also people of different races and creeds across the world. The contributions that Dr. King made to end racial segregation paved the way for CBCF to carry out its mission of eliminating disparities in the African-American community.

“As we move into 2016, Dr. King’s work and life is more important now than ever. We must continue to press toward the dream he envisioned, and eliminate the barriers that hinder us in the 21st century and beyond. As Dr. King stated, ‘The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.’

“At CBCF, we realize the dream Dr. King foresaw, and we remain committed to improving the socioeconomic status of African Americans through research and analysis of the impact of public policy; fostering the exchange of ideas on the social, economic, health and educational disparities plaguing these communities; and developing the next generation of leaders through our Leadership Institute.

“MLK Day builds on Dr. King’s spirit of generosity and service to others. We join our fellow Americans on this National Day of Service and encourage all to make public service a part of their daily lives.”
