WASHINGTON—A. Shuanise Washington, president and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF), released the following statement on the passing of renowned journalist George Curry, former editor-in-chief of Emerge magazine.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of George Curry, a veteran journalist whose career was dedicated to ensuring African Americans had an independent platform for culturally sensitive news, information and perspectives. He was a powerful voice presenting the stories that shaped our world.

“An unabashed supporter of civil rights, Curry channeled his views into Emerge magazine, a cutting-edge news magazine for and about the Black community. The thought-provoking articles and uncompromising cover art were known for bringing the concerns of the African – American community to the forefront of American social and political discussions. A true pioneer, he opened doors and broke down barriers for African Americans in journalism.

“The CBCF honors Curry for his dedication to highlighting and eradicating disparities in the African – American community. We are inspired by his passion for civil rights and the independent black media. His influence will be felt for generations to come.

“Our thoughts are with George Curry’s family, his friends, and the colleagues who loved and respected him so deeply.”
