Nicholas Stewart, an emerging leader in environmental justice, reparative planning, and community advocacy, was raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica. He holds a Master of Science in Environmental Policy and Planning from Tufts University and a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of South Florida. As a 2023 Yale Environmental Fellow, Nicholas addresses environmental challenges in underserved communities and advances environmental policy and justice research.
As a compelling speaker, Nicholas has shared his insights at conferences and podcasts, focusing on environmental and reparative planning issues. His leadership roles, including his tenure as a Community Clean Energy and Environmental Justice Fellow at the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, have allowed him to manage grant programs that directly benefit historically marginalized populations. His co-founding of the Jumbos Community Fridge and Pantry at Tufts University is a testament to his commitment to tackling food insecurity among students.
Nicholas has a history of mentoring, guiding students, and community members in various initiatives to promote sustainable practices and advocate for equity. His research spans neurodegenerative diseases and water quality, contributing to efforts at the Flint Water Lab and Freshwater Future. His work includes ecotoxicology research with Aboriginal communities in Australia and studying schistosomiasis in Senegal. In Ghana, he collaborated with local communities through W.A.S.H. projects and implemented sustainable energy solutions like bio-digesters.
He has also worked in voter outreach through progressive advocacy organizations, increasing youth voter registration and establishing virtual community outreach and organizing. As a Program Management Intern for Economic Inclusion, he has driven workforce development initiatives and assessed the needs of minority- and women-owned business enterprises (MWBEs) within clean energy sector.
