Rediscovering the Power of Purpose and Action Through ALC

At the height of the 1960s, Rep. Charles Diggs (D-Michigan) recognized the absence of space for Black opinions on common political challenges and interests. The birth of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) provided a platform for African American members of Congress to advance policy, introduce legislation that advocate for and amplify the voices of the global Black community.

Despite the years of progress, with recent actions of reversing legislation and policies that sought to protect our basic rights and freedoms, we’re facing threats that have the potential to deepen disparities and widen opportunity gaps. This year’s Annual Legislative Conference (ALC) is our opportunity to come together in-person for the first-time in two years, and reawaken the power of our voices. Advancing our Purpose and Elevating our Power requires us to revisit the history of the CBC and follow the purpose-driven path paved by trailblazers who gave representation to a previously silenced community.

Through our sessions and signature events, conference attendees can expect to engage in thought provoking dialogue that explore how we can mobilize to address or challenge policies and tactics that seek to suppress. With so much at stake – voting rights, public health, economic opportunity and more – #ALC51 will offer participants an environment to explore how research and analysis will play a role in future policy deliberations.

This year’s conference will include more than 100 issue forums and braintrusts led by Congressional Black Caucus members; signature events including the National Town Hall featuring appearances by leading activists and changemakers, A Day of Healing with special guest LeAndria Johnson, The Phoenix Awards, The Black Party; and live entertainment.

As we look ahead to November, Black civic participation in is more critical than ever. We hope to inspire you to claim your purpose and unveil your power. Click here to learn more about #ALC51.

Health and Safety Requirements: Everyone attending the conference in person must verify that they are fully vaccinated and have received at least one booster. Participants are strongly encouraged to protect the community by wearing a mask at all indoor activities. See the Health and Safety page for details.
