Executive Economic Summit VI

7:30 AM - 4:30 PM
The CBCF’s sixth Executive Economic Summit (EES VI) “Detroit, A Tale of Two Cities: Overcoming the Challenges of the Past, Present and Future for Black Businesses,” traveled to Detroit, Michigan in May 2018. The sixth in a series of summits promoting minority access to capital – in the aftermath of Detroit’s 2013 bankruptcy – this summit aimed to raise awareness, inform policy, and provide examples of economic recovery and business solutions for Black businesses and Black communities.
The EES VI Detroit represents a unique opportunity to address employment and black business growth despite post-recession recovery efforts and Detroit’s subsequent 2013 bankruptcy filing. The summit will address federal and local policies and initiatives aimed at encouraging investment and revitalization in Detroit, and the specific challenges preventing black businesses and communities from access to capital, home ownership and neighborhood reinvestment. The summit will discuss a range of socioeconomic issues including the Flint Water crisis, poverty and crime, and the importance of ensuring necessary measures are taken that promote a healthy and vibrant Detroit open for business in which its Black residents can benefit.
Discussion topics will include:
- Navigating the “Two Detroits”: How Black Businesses Operate in the Wake of Gentrification
- Finding the Pathway for Successful Homeownership and Access to Capital for African Americans
- Understanding the Decline of Detroit and How to Be at the Frontline of Recovery
- The Role of Philanthropy in Detroit
