The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s (CBCF) Emerging Leaders Series during the Annual Legislative Conference (ALC), Sept. 18-21, 2013, includes panels and networking opportunities targeted to young adults. Emerging leaders will have the opportunity to meet and engage with other passionate young leaders and advocates working to highlight the issues of the global African-American community and Diaspora.
“The theme of this year’s ALC, “It Starts With You” is especially relevant to young people who will ultimately carry the mantle in working to eliminate disparities among African-Americans and the Diaspora,” said Marjorie Innocent, Ph.D., vice president of research and programs for CBCF. “Our goal is to engage and energize young people to be the change they want to see. The Emerging Leaders Series is a chance for civically invested young professionals to exchange ideas.”
The Emerging Leaders Series will consist of high-impact forums and networking opportunities. The thought-provoking and timely sessions will include the following:
Where Are They Now? 2- 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18
The CBCF Alumni Association is more than 2,000 members strong. This session will showcase the professional paths of alums and the social impact they continue to make after completing a CBCF internship, fellowship or receiving a CBCF scholarship.
Intellectual Property and Technology Sharing: Energy Issues in Developing Nations, 4- 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18
International antagonism is growing with regards to the burden of ownership and payment for intellectual property. This session will examine state compliance with bilateral and multicultural technology transfer agreements involving intellectual property rights.
The Instant Apprentice Luncheon, 12:30-2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19
This luncheon pairs young professionals with top executives and industry power brokers for one-on-one conversations. The “apprentices” will have the opportunity to ask advice on how to maintain a competitive advantage in today’s marketplace.
CBCF Alumni Networking Session, 6:30-5:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19
CBCF Alums are invited to join us to reconnect with fellow alumni and showcase the strong group of individuals who have benefited from CBCF’s internship, fellowship and scholarship programs. This event is by invitation only.
Emerging Leaders Town Hall Meeting, 9-11:55 a.m, Friday, Sept. 20
The session engages young political leaders, corporate executives, community activists, entertainers and other professionals in a discussion about the state of black America. The role of young professionals as individual change makers will be highlighted.
The Black Party, 9 p.m.-1 a.m., Friday, Sept. 20
CBCF’s legendary evening networking event for young professionals and emerging leaders returns with celebrity DJ, “Big Tigger,” host of internationally syndicated countdown show, “Live In The Den With Big Tigger.” This event will take place at the Howard Theatre. Tickets are $75 before Sept. 5. CBCF will provide free shuttle service to and from the Howard Theatre from the Grand Hyatt, Renaissance and Marriott Metro Center hotels every 20 minutes between 8 p.m. – 1:30 a.m., for Black Party attendees.
Young Elected Officials Roundtable, 10:30 a.m. – noon, Saturday, Sept. 21
Young elected officials, policy professionals 40 years of age and under and a select group of African-American leaders from the Obama administration will gather to engage in this important conversation about accessing federal resources; communicating effectively with White House and other federal officials; monitoring and accessing federal funds; promoting civic engagement in local communities; and building and sustaining an exceptional career in public policy.
ALC serves as an outlet to highlight the mission of CBCF – to develop leaders, to inform policy and to educate the public – by providing more than 70-high level, thought-provoking forums to address the critical challenges facing the African-Americans and the Diaspora. It is recognized as one of the most important gatherings of African Americans in the nation.
