WASHINGTON—The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Incorporated (CBCF), has partnered with WHUR 96.3 FM radio and the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) for the sixth annual National HIV Testing Day, a yearly campaign to encourage and educate African Americans about the importance of getting tested for HIV and knowing their status.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1.1 million Americans are currently living with HIV, and nearly one in five do not know they are infected. African Americans are most affected by HIV and in 2010 accounted for an estimated 44 percent of all new HIV infections among adults and adolescents (aged 13 years or older), despite representing only 12 percent of the US population.
