Nicole Austin-Hillery, President and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), issued the following statement on the passing of Congressman and former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner:
It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Congressman and former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, a dedicated public servant, visionary leader, and unwavering advocate for the people of Texas and beyond. Throughout his distinguished career, he championed policies that uplifted communities, fostered economic growth, and advanced equity and justice for all.
Mayor Turner’s legacy is one of service and transformation. As a longtime member of the Texas House of Representatives and later as the Mayor of Houston, he led with passion, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to improving the lives of his constituents. His leadership in times of crisis, particularly during Hurricane Harvey, demonstrated his resilience and deep love for the city he served.
Reflecting on his contributions, we honor the impact he had on so many lives. His dedication to social and economic justice aligns with the core mission of CBCF—empowering the next generation of Black leaders and ensuring that every community has a voice in shaping a more equitable future.
Rep. Terri Sewell, the current Chair of the CBCF Board of Directors, also expressed her condolences and admiration for Mayor Turner’s remarkable legacy: “Sylvester Turner was a force for good, a leader who never wavered in his pursuit of justice and opportunity for all. His commitment to his community and his ability to bring people together will remain an inspiration to us all. We will honor his memory by continuing the work he so passionately led.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with Mayor Turner’s family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched. As we celebrate his life and legacy, we recommit ourselves to advancing the values of service, leadership, and justice that he so deeply embodied.
