Nicole Austin-Hillery, President and CEO of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation issued the following statement on the passing of Representative Sheila Jackson Lee.

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a trailblazing leader, and a tireless advocate for justice, equality, and the well-being of all people. As the former Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) Board, Rep. Jackson Lee’s dedication and service left an indelible mark on our organization and the countless lives she touched through her work.

Her leadership at CBCF was characterized by her unwavering commitment to advancing the mission of the Foundation and empowering the next generation of Black leaders. During her tenure as Chair, she championed initiatives that expanded educational opportunities, promoted economic empowerment, and advocated for social justice, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire us all.

Reflecting on Rep. Jackson Lee’s contributions, we are reminded of her passionate advocacy and relentless pursuit of a more equitable society. Her legacy will continue to guide us as we strive to uphold the values she embodied and the causes she so fervently supported.

Rep. Terri Sewell, the current Chair of the CBCF Board of Directors, shares in our grief and admiration for Rep. Jackson Lee’s legacy. “Sheila was not just a colleague but a mentor and a friend. Her leadership and vision have paved the way for many, and her impact on the CBCF and the broader community will be felt for generations. We will honor her memory by continuing the work she was so passionate about and ensuring that her legacy of service and advocacy endures.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with Rep. Jackson Lee’s family, friends, and all those who were touched by her remarkable life. As we celebrate her legacy, let us recommit ourselves to the values she held dear and strive to make the world a better place, just as she did every day of her extraordinary life.
